I am, alas, pretty much a non-cooker. I come from a family of exceptional and adventurous cooks. These gourmet cooks, both men and women, are very familiar with broccoli raab and purple yams. They could survive quite well without a microwave. Me? I typically bring paper plates and napkins or wine when I am invited to covered dish dinners.
So is it weird that I love the pamphlets put out by food manufacturers, full of recipes featuring (no surprise) their products? I love the odd combinations of ingredients, the snappy advertising copy, and the corny ideas for entertaining. I also love peanuts and peanut butter, but these recipes for using Planter’s Hi-Hat Peanut oil are far from appealing to me.
Apparently mayonnaise was part of every meal. No matter the manufacturer, mayonnaise was a staple of many recipes. Even given consideration for fading, could this photo and recipe have ever been appealing? Peanuts, cabbage, evaporated milk and mayonnaise. EWWW.
Maybe I am being hasty. After all, the promised contents of this pamphlet were, “129 Ways to Better Meals.” And “Home Tested and Proven”. What do I know about great recipes when I am up against “…Secrets of Famous Chefs”. Not much, apparently because I still say EWWW.
that thing in the middle of the cabbage salad looks like something removed during surgery
Imagine being served that yummy combo!
I think you might need some new cookbooks…..
My personal EWWW is pear salad. Lettuce topped with a canned pear, a blob of mayo and sprinkled with shredded orange cheddar cheese.
I have to think anything served with a “blob” isn’t going to be fabulous. I find mayonnaise itself polarizing…
