As a noun, deriving from Greek mythology and religion, the muses were nine goddesses who  were the inspiration for literature, science, and the arts. Today, anything which inspires an artist, musician, or writer can be considered a muse.

I woke up this morning thinking about the old Mother Hubbard rhyme. Since I do not have a dog, I can only think it was because “when she got there, the cupboard was bare…”.
