Our black and white TV was a great toy.

We were on TV!

Our first television set was a wooden cabinet with a window at the top for the screen. The bottom half was covered by a  scratchy fabric where the speaker was and the back of the set was completely open. It was both educational and interactive because of a  “magic drawing screen”— a piece of vinyl  that stuck to the television screen via static electricity. A kit containing the vinyl included  Winky Dink crayons. We could trace the letters or numbers  we saw on the screen. But that wasn’t the best part about playing with the television set. When the TV was on the fritz, a repair man would come to the house and take the TV works to his shop.  What a great opportunity now for us to “be” on TV since we could easily fit in the cabinet. Imagine how much fun that would be even for today’s children.
Not the first time a small one preferred the box a toy came in over the toy itself. Some things are just timeless.

Our TV looked just like that too! Minus the playability factor. Or else my parents just didn’t tell us? 🤔
