What a pleasure to be a part of something new and positive and vibrant. I am one of 115 vendors at a brand new shop in Savannah, called Merchants on Bee. I am a papier mache artist selling my work there and today as part of the Grand Opening weekend, I did a demo. There was great energy and excitement (and shopping!) for the creativity on display. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing hopeful venture.
I will also be teaching classes, but if you be with us, here are my instructions:
HOW TO MAKE PAPIER MACHE
- Make a base from recycled cardboard (trash), wadded up newspaper (trash), plastic grocery bags (trash) and lots and lots of masking tape.
- Protect the remote control, laptop keyboard, phone and anything else you care about. Danger of death by glue!
- Make strips from newspaper, magazine pages, book pages or any kind of paper that can easily be torn.
- Using premixed wallpaper paste, add strips over base and paste and paste and paste.
- Let layers dry and then continue pasting.
- Cover shape with strips of white tissue paper.
- Paint with white Gesso and let dry.
- Paint with acrylic paint and let dry.
- Varnish or seal.
- Stand back and admire your artwork after 10 hours of labor to create a magnet!
I made at least 2 paper mache Halloween heads with a large balloon and lots of mess. My favorite was the mini mouse head.
