Loving it

You probably are clear what you love to do. That thing that just fits you. Maybe playing golf or needlework or working on a car engine. For me, it’s painting, crafting, making stuff. I have a love affair with paper and paste. So where did it begin for you?

Something that has brought me joy, sustained me, soothed me and entertained me had its beginnings with Captain Kangaroo. There was a craft segment on his TV show. The basic camera work focused only on the hands cutting the paper and creating the craft. The projects were simple – just paper, tape or paste and a paper clip or a brad. I can still hear the crisp, sharp sound of the scissors cutting construction paper. I was entranced and so it began.

I am still cutting and pasting. Recently I have been making books of collages. The books are  made out of expired calendars or junk mail and filled with paper scraps and magazine images. I have made a few over the last couple of years…

Some of the pages are absurdly funny. I pick elements that are unrelated or silly. In my world parrots wear hats, dogs are chefs, and birds showup in tennis shoes. Sometimes the images are more realistic for greeting cards or custom pet portraits. What is important never changes – that making them is a place where I lose myself in the making. Like being entranced. Thanks Captain K.
